@gmcalpin - Artist/Writer of Multiplex http://multiplexcomic.com/

@hungryclone: So to begin what is your name?

@gmcalpin: Gordon McAlpin.

@hungryclone: And Gordon what do you do for a living?

@gmcalpin: I'm a freelance digital artist, which basically means I do whatever people ask me to do with the Adobe Creative suite.

@hungryclone: You live in Chicago correct?

@gmcalpin: Yep.

@hungryclone: Did you go to art school or any trade school?

@gmcalpin: I got an Art degree (and an English degree) from Bradley University. It's a liberal arts college.

@hungryclone: I see. Now here's a bit of a leap: how did you get the idea for Multiplex?

@gmcalpin: I was hanging out with my friend Kurt and I mentioned how I wanted to draw comics but didn't have any ideas. He said, "Hey, you should do a comic strip about a movie theater." and I said, "nah, that'd be stupid." Then a few years later, I started doing one.

@hungryclone: On the artistic style of Multiplex: what prompted you to choose that particular style?

@gmcalpin: I just like vector illustration. I thought it would be faster than drawing by hand, once I'd built up enough of a library of characters and backgrounds. I was wrong. Vector illustration is (in many ways) a lot slower than hand drawing.

@hungryclone: Can you give a brief layman's description as to how? The casual observer would assume that it's all cut and paste.

@gmcalpin: You gotta draw it first in order to cut and paste it! Uhhh, it's tough to really sum it up.

@hungryclone: That's fine you don't have to go into the details.

@gmcalpin: I draw it with Illustrator, either with a mouse or a tablet. Depending on what I need to draw. So I thumbnail a strip as normal and then start dropping in characters or backgrounds I already have. But when you change the "camera angle" a lot, you start dealing with a lot of characters and backgrounds. And you have to modify each panel so that the characters are "acting."

@hungryclone: You do get a lot of implied motion with the position of your characters.

@gmcalpin: Yeah, I've figured out a few tricks with that.

@hungryclone: I've noticed that, like most comic artists, your technique has improved. Did you ever have an issue when you started working with different angles? Specifically different views from within the theater?

@gmcalpin: I have issues all the time. When I first started using 45º angles on things (particularly backgrounds), it was tough to figure out how to do that. I can't just do normal perspective all the time because it takes forever and often it makes that background impossible to reuse. So I do things sort of like I'm planning to use it for animation. I use one point perspective instead of three, most of the time.

@hungryclone: The setting is rather linear though. The hallways, the entryway and the concessions stand. Did this help initially?

@gmcalpin: Yeah, it does. But I would draw it that way by hand most of the time. A lot of cartoonists (and film directors) like to set the camera parallel to the background. It does make the backgrounds easier. But I try to avoid using the same camera angle for a while strip like I used to. The idea was that I was doing a "long take" — keeping the camera still for thirty seconds or a minute.It gets boring to look at, and a full page of that is sort of weird looking. Maybe I'm just succumbing to ADD.

@hungryclone: You seem to have the flow of it down though. It reads kind like a really long newspaper comic strip.

@gmcalpin: Yeah, but God forbid I have the characters leave the movie theater.

@hungryclone: It would be an interesting character development. You did jump to the video store with some of the characters though.

@gmcalpin: And Jason's gone to some classic movie theaters. Each of those takes about 6–8 hours to draw. For one panel.

@hungryclone: In regards to the reusing of camera angles the desk where Jason and Kurt discuss movies is the most prominent. Would you say it's symbolic of anything? You said your friend Kurt was the one who suggested making a comic strip about movies. (Quick side note I really enjoyed the plot thread where Jason and Devina explored older theaters)

@gmcalpin: I always wanted to make that a bigger, more prominent arc, but drawing more theaters takes too long. I have to pay rent! As for the manager's station strips, I don't know about symbolic. Jason is the high-brow movie guy, Kurt is the low-brow movie guy. It's just an easy, canned situation where I can have them talk about movies. Especially new movie news. I could just as easily have them walking down the hall (which I've done) or whatever, but I like having Kurt sitting down where you can't see half his face. It makes you pay attention to his eyes.

@hungryclone: I would imagine it's easy to make your own thoughts about movies known via those scenes.

@gmcalpin: Yeah, but it's too easy.

@hungryclone: Would you say most of the characters developed as a result of stories and background evolving or would you say that most of them are based on or influenced by people you know or knew?

@gmcalpin: All the characters are based on me. Kurt is inspired by the real Kurt a little bit (And Whitey is also based on Kurt) but really, they're all just my split personalities banging up against each other. I don't directly pattern any characters off a single person.

@hungryclone: That's rather interesting. Does your psychiatrist know this? : P

@gmcalpin: The strip is my shrink.

@hungryclone: That, I think is a little more interesting then having "you" and Kurt just sitting at a desk talking back and forth.

@gmcalpin: Right. People always assume Jason is me, and he's the most like me of any of them, sure — but he's not me. I've said he's sort of me 10, 15 years ago. A little more chip-on-his-shoulder, a little more opinionated… But I mean, come on, I beat up on Jason more than any other character. He's not a Mary Sue.

@hungryclone: It is usually hard to not assume the main character in a comic isn't based someway on the writer. I could name a handful of webcomic artists that are very much like they’re main character or vice versa.

@gmcalpin: Especially when the main character is half Filipino like the cartoonist. :)

@hungryclone: I was just about to ask that.

@gmcalpin: Jason is a lot me. But he's not me. He expresses opinions about movies I haven't seen. And that's fair, because it's fiction. If it were a movie review, that would be bullshit. But what's important in Multiplex isn't WHAT the characters say about a movie — it's HOW they're talking about a movie. It's about how we talk about movies, not just commenting on movies. And that's a form of commentary, in and of itself.

@hungryclone: Do you research the movies that you haven't seen then?

@gmcalpin: Oh of course. I either watch them, or I read a lot of reviews or internet comments and kind of synthesize them into what I think this character would think about a movie.

@hungryclone: That's true the more high-brow commentary seems to be influenced by social commentary as well as philosophical standpoints.

@gmcalpin: And the more low-brow commentary seems to be influenced by my dick, and my bowel movements. Heh. Like I said, I have a split personality. If I had to be high brow and serious all the time, I would hate the strip after a while. If I could only do gag strippy humor, I would get just as bored. So I do both.

@hungryclone: It's a pleasant mix. It allows the readers not to get bored as well.

@gmcalpin: Hopefully!

@hungryclone: Do you see Multiplex making it to a cartoon or a movie in the future?

@gmcalpin: I would love to do an animated series.

Either a TV one, or an internet one, perhaps would work better. You can be more timely, more risqué (South Park notwithstanding).

@hungryclone: As a movie fanatic do you have any dreams of who would do voice acting?

@gmcalpin: A movie… I wouldn't say no, but I think you need a bigger story than the character-driving stuff I like to do.

@hungryclone: I think it would get a little cliche though if you had an overarching plot like the theater was going to close down.

@gmcalpin: Not really. I would want to do Jason, but Dante Basco (who did Zuko in the Avatar cartoon) could probably do him well, too, if I HAD to use an actor.

@hungryclone: It'd feel a little too much like those cartoon to movie things.

@gmcalpin: I love clichés, though. Don't think I won't be doing that plot someday.

@hungryclone: What about the Futurama movie formats?

@gmcalpin: Multiplex is a movie comic in every conceivable way. I like to up-end movie clichés left and right. Futurama's movies are just three episodes arcs, right? I don't really know. I haven't seen any of them. I don't watch a lot of TV… (I've seen Futurama, of course, and it' great. Just not the newer stuff.)

@hungryclone: By that I mean the last 2. Where the movie is really 3 sections smashed together but still connected with a single theme *Said at the same time* Ha ha exactly.

@gmcalpin: Yeah, you could do that. I'm not sure if I would want to go a little more absurd in something like a cartoon. I want to do some non-canon side stories sooner or later.

@hungryclone: Any hints for the readers on those?

@gmcalpin: Ummm Not yet. I don't like to talk up things that may never happen.

@hungryclone: Good rule to have.

@gmcalpin: I have one 22-page (or so), hand-drawn comic mapped out, though, and I'm hoping to find time to do that. And it is decidedly non-canon. It's like I'm doing a guest strip for my own comic.

@hungryclone: In my mind's eye I see the last panel of anything non-canon with Jason and Kurt watching it as a movie then commenting on how one loves it and the other hates it. I'm sure we're all looking forward to seeing that.

@gmcalpin: My original idea for Multiplex was to do it as an animated short, but I never actually learned Flash. Still don't know it. The plot did have a movie-within-a-movie thing, but it just felt lame, having them watch a movie that wasn't real. You can't comment on it, because it's fake. Any "criticism" is empty.

@hungryclone: That's a valid point but you don't think that since it's your own work you wouldn't be able to criticize it from within the work itself?

@gmcalpin: Yeah, but it'd be lame, because whatever they say, it's because I set it up that way.

@hungryclone: True.

@gmcalpin: They can't really rip on a movie, because if it's bad, it's because I made it bad. Intentionally. (The movie-within-a-movie was a mash-up of Fantastic Planet and Fantastic Four, by the way)

@hungryclone: Haha. Fantastic Planet Four? I hope we haven't strayed too far from the topic. I know you said you wanted to focus on the comic mainly.

@gmcalpin: Voyage to Planet Four, I think it was called. Nah, this is cool. I've never told that to any interviewer, because they never got me down that road.

@hungryclone: Well I'm glad I'm doing a somewhat decent job.

@gmcalpin: Keep it going!

@hungryclone: In any case is there anything you'd like to mention about the comic specifically? Plugs and the like?

@gmcalpin: Oh, that's too wide open. I can't think under pressure like that.

@hungryclone: Haha. Fair enough. I think this has been pretty in depth enough. I've enjoyed going over some of the questions I've had about the specifics of Multiplex. Do you have anything for the readers? Final word? Don't do drugs. Eat your veggies etc.

@gmcalpin: Eat your veggies. But… uh… well, let's just say that when I said all the characters are based on me, that includes Lizzie Stoner.

@hungryclone: Haha. Gotcha. Well it's been fun. Keep up the great work and we're all looking forward to the plot twists and craziness that you'll throw at us in the future.

@gmcalpin: Thanks. Yeah, it was fun.

@chickiepants

@hungryclone: Alright to start off what's your name?

@chickiepants: Natalie Smothers (yes, like the Brothers) I get that a lot from old people.

@hungryclone: Sounds like a cliche 1940's villain's last name. Like someone that smothers people. Sorry : )

@chickiepants: That's me, I'm a total femme fatale.

@hungryclone: So where are you from Madame Fatale?

@chickiepants:Ft. Worth, Texas.

@hungryclone: Born and raised?

@chickiepants: Yup. Well, except for college. I went to St Mary's University down here in San Antonio, then started moving around from there. I blame my ex-husband ;D

@hungryclone: Fair enough.How long were you married?

@chickiepants: 5 years. We had some good times.

@hungryclone: That's nice. Did you end up splitting on good terms?

@chickiepants: Oh, yeah. We're still really good friends - he's @texperiment on Twitter.
We go to concerts together and I can almost always get him to buy me dinner/lunch/brunch/bubble tea.

@hungryclone: Hmm. That's cool. So shifting to something else what do you do for work?

@chickiepants: I am a vet tech by day and a writer at night!

@hungryclone: Very nice. What do you write about?

@chickiepants: People getting themselves into situations that are way more complicated than they will ever know. Also, zombies!

@hungryclone: Haha. Sounds like great reading. Have any sites that you post on or do you have your own site?

@chickiepants: The lady who reviewed my book said it was a "love story that's not really a love story." I post manga reviews at Geekerella Alertand my writing stuff is on a separate one (nataliesbooks.wordpress.com) Oh, the other is geekerella.wordpress.com
I used to try and do other reviews but manga is what i love.

@hungryclone: Cool. Well hopefully this interview will net you some more hits.

@chickiepants: My main hope/goal in life is for people to enjoy reading what I write, so I hope so!
@hungryclone: Sounds like a worthy goal. So what do you do for fun then? Other than righting enjoyable stories?

@chickiepants: Read manga at an alarming rate, do crossword puzzles and go to indie rock shows. Mostly manga, though. I'm a certified addict.

@hungryclone: Have you read anything by Bryan Lee O'Malley? He's the guy that wrote the Scott Pilgrim comics.

@chickiepants: I keep meaning to - he was actually featured in Shojo Beat some years ago and I just keep not doing it for some reason. I really want to read them with the movie coming out though.

@hungryclone:
The movie seems like it's done really well compared to the manga. I mean it's a good translation.

@chickiepants: That's what I hear. The previews look awesome.

@hungryclone: Just a lot.So what got you into manga?

@chickiepants: 15, almost 16 years ago I went to Japan and picked up my first issue of Ranma 1/2. It was all downhill from there :-D

@hungryclone: Oh? You went to Japan? Just a random trip?

@chickiepants: It was on a scholarship from Ft Worth Sister Cities - they offered a trip every year for 10 students and I got the job, so to speak. There was an interview and everything.

@hungryclone: Wow sounds pretty lucky.

@chickiepants: It was great. I was there about 3 weeks.

@hungryclone: Whereabouts?

@chickiepants: Nagaoka, in Niigata prefecture.

@hungryclone: Never got to the big cities?

@chickiepants: We visited Tokyo and Kyoto, but I preferred the smaller towns. Also liked Kyoto much better but that's probably because I hadn't heard of Akiba back then. I wasn't a hardcore otaku yet. :P

@hungryclone: I was born in Kyoto.

@chickiepants:Really? That's awesome!

@hungryclone: Yeah. Little known fact I guess? So next then. What are your favorite foods/shows?

@chickiepants: I love Mediterranean - falafel sandwich with extra hummus - and Japanese - especially unagi and kitsune udon. As for shows, I like L&O SVU and shows like Oz and The Shield. I like what little of Glee I've seen!

@hungryclone: All of that sounds good. Any movies hold a special place in your heart?

@chickiepants: Reservoir Dogs for sure - it was all @mystyr_e - Eli - and I watched in high school. I also adore Joy Luck Club, Suicide Kings and Lilo and Stitch.

@hungryclone: So a couple more questions, What do you think about this volcanic ash wafting over Europe?

@chickiepants: I think it was kind of a cool thing to hear about at first, like - oh man, a VOLCANO ERUPTED - but now it's just causing so many problems.

@hungryclone: Yeah it seems to be more of a problem for shipping goods around.

@chickiepants: Part of me still thinks it's cool, but I do enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction, soooo... ;-)

@hungryclone: lol So what're your plans for the Zombie Apocalypse? Side question I figure you've read the Zombie Survival handbook/World War Z books?

@chickiepants: Find a group of like-minded, well-armed individuals who do not have a tendency toward panic and make for a bunker of some sort. I've read The Handbook and WWZ. LOVED WWZ. I should send you a copy of my zombie book.

@hungryclone: Yeah totally! I'd love to read it. Yeah it was like the history section from the Handbook except longer. Any thoughts about the Economy/the state the US is in right now?

@chickiepants: I think that the economy is slowly starting to make a comeback, but socially it's dangerously close to a shambles.

@hungryclone: Teetering on the edge?

@chickiepants: People don't seem to know how to take things in moderation. They're like goldfish: Their collective memory only lasts 3-5 minutes, and whatever that state of mind is, they think that's all it'll ever be. If the Dow's down, it's OMFG GREAT DEPRESSION!!!11! If we pass health care reform it's GAAAAAH SOCIALISM NOT MY GRAMMA!

@hungryclone: Yeah it is kind of disturbing, the mob mentality.

@chickiepants: It's not one party, either, it's all of them - Dems, GOP, militias, whatever.

@hungryclone: True true.

@chickiepants: Someone needs to put Valium in the water supply or something.

@hungryclone: You're just saying that because you like Valium.

@chickiepants: I prefer Ativan, actually. ;-) Doesn't last as long but works much faster when you need it.;-)

@hungryclone: An expert of the drugs are we?

@chickiepants: Ihave my shrinks in 3 states on speed dial.

@hungryclone: Anyway was there anything you wanted to say to finish up this interview?

@chickiepants: Ummm, not really. Unless it's "Spay and Neuter Your Pets." It's that season at our clinic. Man, there have been some horrors.

@hungryclone: Hosting the Price is Right are we? Haha.

@chickiepants: I would do SUCH a better job than Drew Carey.

@hungryclone: You'll have to be more famous first. So publish that Zombie book fool!

@chickiepants: Ha ha ha, I'm working on it!

@peachdoll

@hungryclone: So first question: what's your name?

@peachdoll: Interesting question~ My birth name is Melissa. But everyone calls me Munin or Moo in these here parts. Moo being short for Munin. And because I like cows.

@hungryclone: Lol. Interesting nickname. So where are you from?

@peachdoll: Haha thank you. I'm born and raised in Miami Florida, in the USA. Lived in central America for a bit but that wasn't for us. Spoiled by freedom, eh?

@hungryclone: I have a couple friends that've done that.

@peachdoll: After living in the US and trying to live in Central America, it's a really hard adjustment. Things you never thought you'd miss, you miss like crazy. I don't think many would stay there.

@hungryclone: Yeah it's a "hard knocked life", So what do you do for a living?

@peachdoll: I'm currently a bum, to put it simply. I volunteer as support for a web hosting company right now, along with working on my own start at a web hosting business. I'm planning on going back to school later in the fall. *crosses fingers*

@hungryclone: Well hopefully that'll go through. Good luck with that. How'd you get into web hosting?

@peachdoll: How I got into web hosting was pretty straight forward I think. It started about.. Almost four years ago. I'm a hobbyist web designer. I decided I had too much extra space and bandwidth I wasn't going to use, and offered it freely to other people. Few years later I decided "I like this!" and have been working on opening a small company.

@hungryclone: Cool. Seems like a good idea combing a hobby into a job. So what else do you like to do?

@peachdoll: I'm a geek. Female geeks, rawr! I play videogames off and on, tinker with computer software. Currently doing some hush-hush stuff to my Wii, for example. I like spending time with my geeky buddies, too. Definitely not your run of the mill shoppoholic chicka. Shopping is fun, when you have the money.

@hungryclone: Sounds like what I do, Except I'm much less tech and much more geek lol. So you have a a wii, any other systems?

@peachdoll: I also have a gorgeous red DS lite that I love. I play that like crazy. I "co-own" a PS3 but I'm surprisingly not too fond of it. I tend to use the PS3 as a media server and watch movies on it. We have a bunch of relics in the closet I'd like to dust off, like a Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis (x3!) Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64.... Did I mention I grew up with two gamer brothers?

@hungryclone: Haha. Nice. I'm really sad I never got into the DS. I kept putting it off assuming Nintendo would come out w/ something better. Lo and behold they keep making awesome games for it.

@peachdoll: That's a little harsh~ I love my DS Lite. There's the DSi if you want to look into it. I haven't used it myself, but it's supposed to have some neat features. You should jump into it again.

@hungryclone: No money. I waste it all on warhammer 40k. Of course when I buy one the new thing comes out right?

@peachdoll: Haha, I totally get what you mean. So many great DS games. I'm not buying a new DS until this bad boy crashes and burns on me.

@hungryclone: So what's your favorite game of all time then?

@peachdoll: My favorite game of all time? That's such a hard choice!

@hungryclone: It is.

@peachdoll: Could I have ties? It's really between The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and LUNAR: Silver Star Story.

@hungryclone: Yeah they're different systems so sure. Mine is probably Mega Man 2 or Rock and Roll Racing for SNES

@peachdoll: Wow, you're an old schooler. That's very cool. I definitely feel you about the money thing. (shakes head) Too little money, so many games. I try not to go crazy.

@hungryclone: Lol yeah it's hard being a geek. So what's going on in your life right now?

@peachdoll: You mean personally? Right now I'm preparing for my grandmother's arrival from Cuba next week. I miss her. I'm in this strange in-between state of a relationship. I like someone, they know I like them, but we're continuing to be friends. Strange, that. Being stressed on a side project that was supposed to be fun.

@hungryclone: Flurry of questions: Are you of Cuban descent? Do neither of you want to say anything? (Lame advice but I'd say do something about it. Life's too short lady!) Side project is a web content/hosting thing?

@peachdoll: Yay, questions! Yep, I'm of Cuban descent. Both parents immigrated from Cuba years ago. I don't know much about my father because he's not around now. My mother arrived during what's called Mariel. When she was fifteen, there was a huge movement in Cuba where people who dared to leave illegally took off in small boats for America.
We both feel the same about each other, we discussed it in length. But she just came off of a bad relationship and I respect that she needs space.
The side project isn't anything hosting related. It's a community project for any Naruto Twitter dork out there. People are just way too dramatic. Really stressful.

@hungryclone: Life can be complicated huh?

@peachdoll: Definitely! But I think patience comes a long way, you know? And understanding. You can't be a close-minded jerk who wants everything their way. I think that's a key life lesson thing right there. Because you know, I should be giving people life lessons.

@hungryclone: It's good advice in anycase. So jumping in another direction what going on in the world right now is drawing your attention in a positive or negative way?

@peachdoll: The Iran election really upset me, for starters. I don't believe that election was one fair and square at all. Growing up in a Cuban household, my family is very political. It all just makes me feel uneasy, like we're dealing with another Castro. That's another thing, Fidel Castro. People saying he's dead, I don't know. If he's dead, his brother isn't doing any better for Cuba.

@hungryclone: Yeah that's a big one though Cuba in a sense is reminding me of N. Korea.

@peachdoll: I completely agree. The depressing part is you'll always find people who are happy with the situation in their countries, as bad as they are. Michael Jackson's death really shook me. I didn't believe it at first. But then I saw the news and cried. I loved his music.

@hungryclone: MJ to was obviously big news. He was so international so that's to be expected.

@peachdoll: Yeah. MJ will definitely be missed. I hate that so many people who hated and bashed him before, are now saying how great he is. That's a bit of a slap in the face.

@hungryclone: So I think I've run out of questions.

@peachdoll: Aw, you've run out of questions? I'm sorry. I wish I could've been more entertaining!

@hungryclone: Yeah I'm an ill prepared interviewer like that.

@peachdoll: Aw don't say that. It was fun. I hope I wasn't a bore to interview.

@hungryclone: Not at all. Super interesting and I walked away getting to know you better so my job here is done. Anything for your fellow tweeters who might read this?

@peachdoll: Hmmm. A message, you say? Don't stress about the little things. In the end, we're all gonna get old and wear diapers anyway. And keep on Tweeting!

@S_Wash

@Hungryclone: Ok cool so first what is your name?

@S_wash: Stephanie W. Thus S_Wash!

@Hungryclone: And where are you from? lol

@S_wash: Laurel, Montana. Originally, been in Vegas for 11 yrs now

@Hungryclone: That's a bit of a leap isn't it?

@S_wash: Yep, small town MT girl moving to Vegas all by myself at 22. I was in for a surprise!

@Hungryclone: Hmmm. So why the move?

@S_wash: Ahh MT could not contain this girl! Not much for me to do there, Im a big city, lots of people kind of gal!

@Hungryclone: Wow go you!

@S_wash: Yep, school was my excuse to get out of the country life. Vegas was just easy, free place to live, close to in-state tuition. Always said Vegas was a nice place to visit, but youd never want to live here. But, here i am!

@Hungryclone: Cool so school brought you out to Vegas. Why did you settle down?

@S_wash: Well i was never a good student. Only went to a semester out here and the rest is history. Vegas grows on ya. Life happens. Its a cool town, hard to imagine leaving this place, but i would in a heartbeat if something took me elsewhere.

@Hungryclone: Hmmm. You seem to love traveling. So where else in this wide world have you been?

@S_wash: I've probably been to around 30+ states in the US. Canada, Mexico & Guatemala. I do love to travel, but most of that is due to my family making the plans. Id love to travel the world someday. Im half Filipino, never been to the Phillippines!

@Hungryclone: Haha. Well I was half Korean and until just recently hadn't been to Korea. How do you feel your life has been different/better/worse being half-asian?

@S_wash: I'll get there one day, have lots of family there to meet! I feel blessed to be half Asian. It made me unique. I get to experience a different culture. The Filipino people are good folks. I know i am not your typical Asian, growing up in MT but i cherish that side of me!

@Hungryclone: Yeah. I can completely understand that. So not to hop subjects but what do you do for a living?

@S_wash: I work for Zappos.com. Been with them for 4 1/2 yrs. Customer service. It is the best company to work for, I am truly blessed!

@Hungryclone: So for the readers that don't know what Zappos.com is could you explain a little?

@S_wash: We are a service company that just happens to sell shoes.... and now a whole lot more! Our motto as a company is: developing people and cultivating our culture! Its not about making a sale, its about giving people the best experience they have ever had!

@Hungryclone: Sounds like a pretty decent company drive. So what else do they sell now?

@S_wash: You name it, we are starting to carry it. Kitchenware, camping gear, apparel, beauty products, electronics, housewares. I see something new on the site everyday that surprises me. Business has been good lately too!
@Hungryclone: That's pretty cool. So another leap again. Anything world news-wise been on your mind? Economy, N. Korean missile launch etc?

@S_wash: I do love watching/reading the news but havent been on it lately. I'm trippin over the N. Korean missile launch, hard to believe this kind of thing can happen. Oh, and i am excited about this economic stimulus. Hope to see a lil difference on my check soon!
@Hungryclone: Yeah I think everyone's hoping for that. So what are your plans for the future then?

@S_wash: Wow, big question... Umm I guess i am just playing it by ear. Im pretty content where life is right now. I have dreams of living near the ocean one day, so that is a goal i have in mind.

@Hungryclone: Nice. I like the fly by the seat of your pants attitude. So then what do you do for fun? Lots of options in Vegas I'd assume.

@S_wash: You know it is funny that i dont take advantage of all the things that Vegas has to offer. I dont gamble, grew out of the nightclubs. I enjoy the typical things. Movies, concerts, going to sporting events, bowling, pool, going to the park with my dog. I also love doing the toursit thing. Runnin around on the Strip never gets old to me.

@Hungryclone: You know that's probably a good thing that you enjoy things other than the sleaze.

@S_wash: Yeah, im a pretty wholesome kind of gal. I enjoy having all the conveniences that Vegas has to offer, even if i dont take advantage of them!

@Hungryclone: Alright well I think I've got all of my questions in. Anything you like to leave possible readers?

@S_wash: Well, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed! A profile in 140 characters or less just doesnt give the depth of Ms. S_Wash. Hope everyone gets a taste of a lil bit about me! Thanks for reading!

@Jyoseph

@Hungryclone: Ok. So first off what's your name?

@Jyoseph: Your Mom. Hehe, j/k Joe Holst

@Hungryclone: lol Nice. And where were you born?

@Jyoseph: Davenport, Iowa

@Hungryclone: Nice. Did you hear the news about Iowa dropping the ban on same sex marriage?

@Jyoseph: Uhhh, I think I heard something in passing but not in detail

@Hungryclone: Yeah same here just on NPR the Iowa supreme court deemed it unconstitutional.

@Jyoseph: Interesting. Now I can move back and be with my bff from highschool! (don't tell sarah)

@Hungryclone: lol

@Jyoseph: heh

@Hungryclone: So what do you do for a living?

@Jyoseph: It's twofold; My wife and I own a photography business together (just the two of us run it) and I'm a freelance web designer/developer.

@Hungryclone: Cool. What kind of site design do you do? By that I mean who mostly do you deal with? Small companies etc

@Jyoseph: Mostly small to medium sized businesses, yeah... and the majority of that would be more along the lines of ecommerce sites. I do more Coldfusion than actual design, though.

@Hungryclone: Interesting. How about your photo clients? Weddings?

@Jyoseph: Yeah we started out doing pretty much anything under the sun, now we're starting to scale back and do mostly weddings, senior portraits, some promotional, etc.

@hungryclone: Sounds good. One of my ex-coworkers had a blooming photography business on the side while he was in the Air Force and that's what he did when he got out. SO you said Sarah. That's your wife's name. Where/when did you guys meet?

@Jyoseph: We met January 2nd back in 1998, I was her server at a restaurant here in St. Louis called Old Spaghetti Factory. (I guess I was a good waiter?)

@Hungryclone: Wow. Look at you. From waiter to husband. So how'd you cross that level? It seems a bit of a jump to go from serving someone to dating etc.

@Jyoseph: Yeah we actually were just really good friends for about a year or so. We had sort of a silent crush on eachother I think though.

@Hungryclone: Oooh. Nice.

@Jyoseph: One night we went out for coffee and just talked about it, had a nice kiss and started dating that day. That was was 9/4/99

@Hungryclone: *high five*

@Jyoseph: yessss!

@Hungryclone: Wow. Nice that you have all those dates rapped up. So when do you guys tie the knot?

@Jyoseph: June 25th 2005 EEERRRRT June 25th 2000 lol

@hungryclone: lol

@Jyoseph: Let the record reflect that was a mere type, lol Typo, rather. So been married almost 9 years now
@Hungryclone: So I hear you have another child on the way? Is it a girl or boy?

@Jyoseph: Yeah, our baby Jack is almost 1 year old. Sarah is 3 months pregnant, we find out whether boy/girl in a couple weeks. I think it's a girl tho, that's my guess.

@Hungryclone: Haha. Father's intuition I guess. I have to say your son's name is badassery. Jack Valentine Holst. Though admittedly he's going to grow up to be a fantastic explorer or super villain. So any names in mind for your daughter?

@Jyoseph Either of those would be awesome! Ummm, yeah actually we were just talking about that. I like the name Lucy for some reason, and we both like Edith, both old school names. Vivian is cool too. All are family names.

@Hungryclone: Very nice. So jumping to another subject what are your guy's plans for the future? Not moving from St. Louis?

@Jyoseph: Nah, Sarah's family is here so we're staying. She's close to her family (it's a Korean thing) Most of my family is still in Iowa.

@Hungryclone: So anything happeneing in the world catching your attention or worrying you lately? G20 summit, North Korea's missile launch etc?

@Jyoseph: Uhhhh, the economy is sort of hitting us all. That hits close to home because it messes with my ability to make ends meet, which just aint cool

@Hungryclone: Do you find it hard being in photography specifically? Or is it just of a general thing?

@Jyoseph Umm, honestly more generally. It's more the moral of our country, when we have an economic downturn the media jumps on that and people watch the media and everyone is grumbling, you know.

@Hungryclone: Yeah. There's a general sense of confusion and pessimism about the economy.

@Jyoseph: Exactly. So even people who are not affected are grumbling, that kinda thing.

@Hungryclone: Do you think it might get better with Obama in the big seat? Especially with his work worldwide?

@Jyoseph: I think that's what the people want, and we're back to boosting the moral (and attitude) of our country, so yeah at this point now that he's in there, I think it's for the better.

@Hungryclone: Alright. So on a lighter note what do you like to do for fun?

@Jyoseph: I smoke a lot of crack, a lot of crack. I kid. I'm old now so I usually geek out on my laptop while Sarah knits or does Sudoku. I like to throw boomerangs, that gets me outside.

@Hungryclone: Hmm. So I remember you mentioning that you are "green" in practice. Do you want to go into that?

@Jyoseph: Haha, I don't blame you for not wanting to touch the I smoke crack bit.... Yeah Sarah and I have made a total transformation in that regard. It happened back when we found out Sarah was pregnant, I bought her a book called The Organic Pregnancy. A lot of really good general info in that book. Once we had Jack we found it hard to buy baby products not made of weird plastics made in China, and so it began.

@Hungryclone: Seems you were ahead of the curve.

@Jyoseph: Now everything we use, cosmetics, cleaning products, you name it. Yeah a little bit actually, now it's cool to "go green" which is awesome. We take it pretty seriously

@Hungryclone: That's cool.

@Jyoseph: The products are actually much better, ever try Toms toothpaste? So much better dude.

@Hungryclone: Nope. So what do you think about the current state of the information age and your place as a random person being able to talk to and meet any other random person on the other side of the world?

@Jyoseph: I think it rules. 1 sec lemme dig up a link .... Have you seen http://omegle.com/ ?

@Hungryclone: No..*checks link*Crazy

@Jyoseph: I just initiated a chat.....
"Stranger: oh hello
You: ohai!
Stranger: I made you a cookie
You: hai2u!
You: orly!? thanks!
Stranger: but I eated it
You: :-O
Stranger:
You: got more?
Stranger: no
You: that makes me sad
Stranger: sorry"
Anyway, I think it's cool how you can talk to and meet random people on the internet. That's how I met you right? And you're a cool dude
@Hungryclone: Yeah pretty much. Go information technology.

@Jyoseph: *high fives information technology*

@Hungryclone: Well I think that's all the questions I had. Anything you want to leave possible twitter viewers of this blog

@Jyoseph: Follow @hungryclone and @ohithere!!

@Hungryclone: Haha. Thanks and thanks for the interview.
